Kukutāruhe Gully lies in the heart of Hamilton City. The restoration of the gully has been heavily supported by the Waikato River Authority. Wiremu Puke, a tohunga whakairo (master-carver) and tohunga whakapapa (ancestral expert), whose personal whakapapa is is through predominately Ngaati Porou iwi (tribe) of East Cape and to the hapuu (sub-tribe) Ngaati Wairere of Tainui iwi (tribe), designed and led a small team of carvers in the construction of the only Pre-European styled Maaori garden of its kind in the world: Te Parapara Garden at the Hamilton Gardens.
